Mutt & Jeff Disco, the sound system Jamaica Nice. donated to Alpha, is now the main instrument in a groundbreaking Introduction To Sound System Performance class.
The Alpha School of Music is host to the world’s only formal training in the fundamentals of Jamaican sound system performance. Mutt & Jeff Disco, the school's vintage-looking sound system, was donated by Jamaica Nice. in order to create the course. Students learn the fundamentals of setting up, operating, troubleshooting and performing with a sound system. The instructor, Ronnie Jarrett, says Alpha’s sound system course ensures Jamaica will be part of the international scene going forward.
“We don’t know what will happen in the future but we are certain about what's happening now,” says Jarrett. “We are seeing a rapid rise in sound system appeal globally so if only for that reason, Jamaica should not be left behind.”
Sound systems are the foundation of the Jamaican music industry, the living laboratory where many of the musical milestones were developed and a community institution that has been called “the talking Gleaner” and “the Voice Of the People” due its civic role in the society. The training at Alpha will do what it has done for sound system participants for generations – make Alpha students more employable.
Many thanks to the Jamaica Nice. community for making this possible!
