Jamaica Nice. supports Alpha School of Music student internships at the Supernova International Ska Festival in Fort Monroe, Virginia for the second consecutive year.
The Supernova International Ska Festival has been an annual event for ska fans worldwide since 2013. As the temporary capital of the ska music community every September, Jamaica Nice. is very pleased to join with legendary record label Studio One, the Jamaica Ministry of Culture and the innovative S Hotels Jamaica in helping Alpha School of Music students and staff be a part of the signature event, learn about festival production and spend time with the ska community.
Sparrow Martin, Alpha's Bandmaster Emeritus, said the opportunity for students and Alpha's music staff like himself, as well as Alpha's current bandmaster, Gay Magnus, to participate in the Supernova International Ska Festival is invaluable.
"Alpha played an important role in the development of ska," said Sparrow. "Ska music is still meaningful to Alpha, and, although not in its original form, to the rest of the world. Supernova is a magnificent way for Alpha to connect with the people share a love for the music that is so near and dear to us all."
Supernova Ska 2024 was the first trip off the island for Alpha keyboard student, Josh-Lemar Palmer. After the festival , Josh-Lemar said it was a wonderful experience he will carry with him on his music journey. "Even though Jamaica is a small country," he said, "we have impacted the world in major way and that was evident at the festival. I will use what I learned to improve as a musician and producer. A big thank you to Supernova, Studio One and Jamaica Nice for giving me the experience of a lifetime."
